Paris Hilton may serve only hours in jail due to inmate overcrowding, a Los Angeles Sheriff’s rep tells People magazine.
“She could be processed into jail and processed out hours later – that’s possible,” says spokesman Steve Whitmore, whose department runs the jail.
“It would mainly be due to the jail overcrowding issue. It all depends on the inmate population at the time she’s processed.”
Whitmore adds: “But the public can expect that the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department will make the best decision for everyone involved. We will treat [Hilton] as we would any other. That’s our goal.”
Initially, it had appeared that Judge Michael T. Sauer would enforce the full 45-day sentence he handed down on May 4. But veteran DUI lawyer Lawrence Taylor tells PEOPLE: “At the end of the day, it’s the Sheriff’s Department that has to make do with the realities of the overcrowding issue. The judge was very aware of that. The jails simply don’t have the room.”
Whitmore says the prison to which Hilton has been ordered to surrender to is “bursting at the seams.” In addition, an early-release policy for overcrowding among female inmates gives preference to nonviolent first-time offenders.

you know what I do not like Paris at all but the jail sentence is not fair. other celebs have gotten off for far worse. I think a fair punsihment wouldve been so many hrs of community service. Paris would hate doing all that work so maybe by doing all that work she hates, it would teach her not to do what she did.
I agree with you M. I think the punishment is completely NOT fair. It’s like I believe I remember how one of the Black Eyed Peas or someone recently got caught with DRUGS and all they’re getting is a FINE. Isn’t drug use/possession of drugs a LOT worse of an offense than a suspended license? I think so.
I’ve read other articles on Entertainment Tonight saying she’s gonna have to serve 23 days. I hope that’s not right. It’s not like she’s some violent offender and besides from things I’ve read most people just serve at most 3 days for this same kinda offense. Besides if they can allow that chick from “Lost” Michelle Rodriguez out within HOURS for the same exact offense why can’t they Paris? It seems pretty discriminatory to me.

The 45 day jail sentence for Paris Hilton is unfair. She could have been given community service. Martha Stewart and Little Kim received jail sentences after they lost at trail. It was reported that the Judge handing out the sentence received a standing ovation from his friends. Wouldn’t it have been wonderful if he had ordered Paris to a drug and or alcohol rehab program. What will she learn in jail? Also shouldn’t an American citizen expect to be safe in an American jail. Aren’t we a civilized society. How will we feel if something happens to her.
The jail sentence is more than fair. That little Brat has to learn that she is not above the law. This should teach her some manners and make her behave like a good citizen, not some kind of rich kid who can do what she want to . Send her to jail as anyone who does the same thing would do. If she is too stupid to know that she can’t drive, she is a danger to society. In jail she will have time to think about it.
Why does Paris feel above the law? She must have never heard the quote, “You do the crime you do the time.” She needs to be a role model for young women not a spoiled brat with money getting away with murder. I can only imagine how embarassed her family must be dragging their name down.
