Some people think Paris Hilton, who co-stars in “House of Wax” and is set for a fourth season of Fox’s “The Simple Life,” is stupid.
But some call her - without irony - the hardest-working woman in show business, and Hilton readily agreed.
“I am,” she said, having just flown from Tokyo, where she was promoting her perfume and fashion line, to Los Angeles to promote “House of Wax” (opening Friday), which is being called, without irony, a serious foray into acting.
Cast as Paige, a sexually active, mostly sweet girlfriend in a group of teens who run into trouble when they camp in the woods, Hilton was reportedly paid $2 million for her supporting role. (Producer Joel Silver strenuously denied this.)
“It’s, like, a lot of pressure,” Hilton said of her role in the teen horror flick, admitting she was nervous the first night on the set. “I had a panic attack.”
She went to co-star Elisha Cuthbert’s trailer.
“It was four in the morning,” Cuthbert recalled. “It’s raining, it’s miserable outside, and we’ve got this huge sequence to shoot, and she’s not doing good. It’s a lot of pressure for someone, especially their first time, and for her it was scary. As an actor, you want all the other actors to give the best performance they can, too. What can I do to help? So I said, `Let’s forget everything else, forget it’s four in the morning, forget that they’re waiting, ’cause they can wait. We’re good. Let’s sit down, read the lines. Let’s go over it, and once we feel comfortable, let’s go do it for them.’ And that’s what we did.”
Hilton sounded blase about playing the requisite sexy blonde.
“They needed the sexy character,” she said. “There’s a sexy character in every movie. So I played the sexy girl who has a little strip scene, and whatever, every movie needs it. I’m glad to do it.”
What she has done is nearly unprecedented: Jump from the society pages to real stardom. Few socialites have managed to make a movie, much less become a brand, as Hilton has with TV, film, fashion, cosmetics and, in August, music.
The 24-year-old credits her parents for her work ethic.
“My whole family has always taught me to be humble and to, I don’t know, work for something and make something of my own. I just wanted to, also. I was like, `I want to make more money than my parents.’ I didn’t want to be like all these socialites who sit at home and go to debutante balls and marry some guy and that’s it. That’s all they do. I wanted to be able to do my own things and buy whatever I wanted and do whatever I wanted. It’s a lot of work to do that. I have to work every day.”
Now that she’s doing it, surprisingly, Hilton is looking forward to motherhood - and marriage.
“I want to have kids in, like, the next two years because I know that completes your life,” she said. “I’ve had so much fun and had a great life. I’ve accomplished everything that I’ve wanted, and I think that when I have kids, that’ll make me happier than I already am.”
And would she need to be married to do that?
“Definitely.”
